  Chapter One

  Reno Davis pulled his motorcycle in front of the bakery shop, cut the motor, and swung his long leg over his hog to dismount. Removing his helmet, he set it on the seat and then rubbed a hand over his short cropped hair. The chief wanted donuts, so here Reno was getting them for the bear.

  The shifter had an affinity for sweets, and it was Reno’s turn to make the run before heading into work. As he gazed out at the beautiful morning and inhaled the crisp air, he pocketed his keys and walked into Sweet Delight.

  The smell of yeast, dough, sugar, and melted butter assailed him, and Reno had to admit that the aroma made his mouth water. He may not be that big of a sweets eater, but he loved homemade bread.

  And the place smelled like a few fresh loaves had just come straight from the oven. He shoved his hands into his front pockets, taking a look around the shop. The shelves were filled with everything that could keep a dentist in business. He spotted glistening sticky buns, chocolate-studded cookies, and white powder as far as the eye could see, but Reno had eyes only for the bin of assorted breads.

  “Morning,” said a man who had a powerful upper body, strong jaw, and a pair of deep-set eyes the color of a clear sky. Reno sniffed the air…and then sniffed again. Behind all the sweet aromas that were surrounding him from the baked goods, he scented shifter. Though he inhaled as deeply as he could without being too obvious, he couldn’t place what breed the man was. It was a very odd scent. The flavor on the air almost tasted like open fields and wild grass.

  It made his coyote uneasy, wary. He wasn’t sure what kind of beast this man carried, but it was definitely predatory. Reno gave him a cautious nod. “I need a dozen donuts.”

  His eyes covertly followed every move the guy made. Reno didn’t like coming across unknowns. He knew he was in a town of werewolves, but he knew werewolf behavior. This guy was unfamiliar. It also seemed odd to him that this strong man worked in a bakery. He didn’t look the type to be baking cookies. More like the type that should be working on heavy machinery or something that required muscle. Muffins definitely didn’t suit him.

  “Haven’t seen you around here before,” the guy said as he grabbed a box from a shelf and began to construct the thing.

  “Just transferred to the fire station,” Reno answered as he took in the way the guy’s muscles flexed as he worked. The shifter had one hell of an upper body.

  “Name’s Kenway.” The man stuck out his hand after setting the box down.

  Reno gazed at the hand for a moment and then gave it a firm shake. Kenway must have noticed his hesitancy. “Buffalo.”

  “What?” Reno asked as he glanced up into the guy’s eyes. “What was that?”

  Kenway leaned on the shiny counter, his arms seeming to double in size. “You’re trying to figure out what I am. I’m a buffalo shifter.”

  Reno had never met a buffalo shifter before. He hadn’t even known they existed. He was a reserved man by nature, had always been that way. He used caution when meeting someone until he got to know them, and then he usually had a friend for life. Finding out Kenway was a large predator gave Reno pause. “Coyote,” he offered in return.

  Kenway gave a nod as he stood straight. “So, did you want all the same or a variety?”

  “What?” Reno asked. God, he was starting to sound daft even to himself. He was studying the man like he had never seen another human
being in his life. He wasn’t sure what fascinated him so much about Kenway. His coyote was sizing the guy up, but Reno was wondering what he would look like in his shifted form.

  “Donuts,” Kenway said as his eyes increased in intensity. Reno could tell the guy was getting irritated. He tore his stare away from the buffalo and glanced at the glass case.

  “It doesn’t matter. They’re for the firehouse.” Reno wasn’t going to be eating them. He turned, glancing over the bakery, forcing himself not to outright gawk at the man. He tried his best to regain the cool composure he had before he realized Kenway was a shifter.

  Pulling his hands from his jeans, Reno glanced at the shelf with the fresh breads. Now these he could eat all day long. Heated up with some butter…Reno would be in heaven. He grabbed two loaves, one French bread, the other plain white. His mother used to make fresh bread every Saturday when he was growing up. To smell the fresh loaves made him feel nostalgic. That reminded him, he needed to call her and let her know he had settled into Brac Village. She would worry about him if he didn’t. “I’ll take these as well.”

  When Kenway didn’t say anything, Reno knew he had offended the guy. He wasn’t trying to be an outright prick, but he didn’t apologize either. It wasn’t every day he ran into a buffalo. Kenway couldn’t blame him for his curiosity.

  “Here you go,” Kenway said as he set the box on the counter and rang everything up. Just as Reno dug into his back pocket for his wallet, another more subtle scent tickled his nose. It was too light to even make out, so he simply ignored it. Reno just wanted to get the donuts and head into work. However, just as he pulled his wallet free, the scent suddenly became stronger. Reno stilled as the sweet aroma invaded his nose, forcing its way in and making it impossible to ignore.

  “Hey, Kenway,” a human said as he walked from the kitchen. “Ronny got that order ready.”

  “Thanks,” Kenway called out.

  Reno was still standing there statue-still, his eyes raking over the guy who had come up front. He took in the short brown hair that held just the slightest of curls at the top and felt his mouth go as dry as cotton.

  Reno dug the money out, handed it to Kenway, and then grabbed the things on the counter, avoiding glancing at the human. He walked out of the store with a mumbled, “Thanks.” The average-height human who had stood there glancing back at him with eyes the color of dark blueberries had no idea what had just happened. Reno’s fingers ached to run over the smooth skin that had just the right amount of muscle tone. He wanted to know every inch of that perfect body and stare into those azure eyes. An ache panged in his bones and jolted down to his loins. Reno burned like the heat of the desert on a hot day. Despite all his wants and desires, he forced himself to leave the shop and the man behind.

  Once he was clear of the bakery, Reno took in a deep breath, clearing the scent from his lungs. His fingers gripped the box so tight that he almost crushed it in his hands as he remembered the soft, edible lips.

  Sweet baby Jesus.

  He had to get his head together. He also had to calm his coyote. Reno was five seconds away from tossing the box to the ground, going back inside, and taking the human down right there on the floor of the bakery, claiming his mate. The urge was so strong that his legs were aching from locking his muscles into place.

  Instead of following his urge, he ran a hand down his face as he tried to calm his body and mind. This was unreal. He needed to think. There was no way he was going to claim the human right there in front of everyone. Not only would people think him crazy, but he would probably be arrested for all kinds of things. Reno wouldn’t have given a shit, but he was pretty sure the human would not appreciate being suddenly ravaged by someone he didn’t know.

  Securing the box and small bag of bread to his motorcycle, Reno pulled his helmet on and swung his leg over. He desperately tried not to glance back inside the bakery, but inside he wondered if the human was watching him, curious about his abrupt departure.

  His hand shook as he started the motorcycle. Reno cursed at the way his body hummed with excitement and need.

  He had to think about this logically. The man was human and would probably call the cops if Reno tried to fuck him on the bakery floor. As a matter of fact, Reno had no doubt he would be wearing handcuffs if he tried. Surely he would be charged with sexual assault. While he didn’t care about sex in public, he sure as hell did not want to go to jail for it.

  For now, getting to work would be a damn good idea and jail-free.

  Then again, handcuffs wouldn’t be so bad as long as his mate was cuffed to the counter, wearing nothing but flour.

  Against his better judgment, Reno glanced up before pulling off and saw the human looking his way from the large storefront window. His blue eyes widened and darted away when he saw Reno glancing at him. Reno smirked. The human looked like a scared little rabbit peering at the predator through blades of grass on a warm day.

  Damn it!

  Reno pulled his hog back into the parking spot and left the damn thing running. He removed his helmet and walked back inside the bakery. Self-control was not one of his strong suits. As a matter of fact, he sucked at it. All he wanted right now was to taste his mate.

  The guy blinked rapidly as Reno strode toward him with a predatory gait, his eyes fixed on nothing and no one but the man right in front of him as if the rest of the world did not exist, and in that instant, it didn’t. Only Reno, the human, and Reno’s desire to mate with him existed.

  “Can I help you?” his mate asked with a slight squeak as Reno invaded his personal space.

  Without one single word, Reno snagged his mate behind the neck and pulled him close. His actions held a high level of confidence, and anyone watching would have thought he was completely sure about what he was doing. But inside, he hoped like hell the guy didn’t slap the shit out of him and call the cops.

  Reno stared deeply into his mate’s eyes like a beast about to attack his prey. “You are no longer single. Understood?” Reno didn’t wait for a response. His coyote wouldn’t let him. He pulled the guy to him, his mate’s breath touching his lips for a brief moment before Reno dipped his head for an openmouthed kiss. Reno not only plunged his tongue deep into his mate’s mouth, but nipped his bottom lip for good measure. His fingers curled in the man’s dark-brown hair when the taste of the human flooded his mouth. His mate stirred Reno’s body to a level of desire that he had never tasted as he gave the short strands a slight tug before he pulled back.

  Kissing the man had been like touching his lips to a live wire. He was hooked, addicted to the taste and the scent of the human. Reno wanted to taste him again and again.

  “What the hell do you think you’re doing?” his mate asked as he shoved at Reno’s chest.

  Reno pulled his hair tighter, locking eyes with his mate. “Getting you ready for the dance.”

  Reno released the man and walked out of the bakery, jumped on his motorcycle, and took off down Main Street. His body was tight, hot, and needy, the pressure almost too much. That was the exact reason he hadn’t wanted to look back when he left the first time.

  Now he wanted to fuck. His mate barely let Reno get away with a kiss, so he would probably not allow Reno to suddenly attack and claim him.

  Besides, coyotes liked to play. They liked chasing their mates down, which, in a way, was almost like stalking them. He was about to begin a game with his little human, petting and teasing until he heard sweet begging coming from the man’s lips.

  Reno pulled into the parking lot of the fire station, barely able to stand he was so hard and ready. He knew that if he didn’t take evasive action that he would turn around and go right back. He paced back and forth a few times, thinking of what to do. Finally, he flipped his cell phone open and called the number on the front of the box of donuts.

  “Sweet Delight.” It was Kenway.

  “Tell your little baker to get out of there.”

  “Who the hell is this?”

  “I�
�m going to be coming for him, Kenway. If he doesn’t want to be claimed in front of everyone, I suggest he hides for now.” It was the best Reno could do. He knew he couldn’t stop himself from going back there, so he had to make sure his mate wouldn’t be there when he did.

  The phone was silent. “Are you the guy who just left here, the one who kissed him?”

  “He’s my mate and I’m coyote. This is his only warning.” Reno hung up, smiling to himself as he pocketed the phone. Those who weren’t coyote wouldn’t understand the mating dance. They would look at Reno as some sort of psycho. There was nothing psychotic in his mind, only a lust that burned like the sun and an unquenchable desire for his mate’s body.

  Oh no. He was definitely not psycho. He was simply on the hunt and ready to play. Grabbing the box and bag, Reno headed into the station.

  His mate had just been warned.

  Game on.

  * * * *

  Covering his parted lips lightly with his fingers, Baker Cross was still standing there in shock when the phone on the wall rang. He could still feel the flush of adrenaline tingling through his body. Had anyone in his life ever kissed him like that before? He knew the answer before the question finished forming in his head.

  Never.

  Kenway answered as Baker glanced out of the window, his thoughts fuzzy as he found it hard to think. Who was that guy and why did it feel as if the man had just fucked him with his mouth? As the remembered kiss buzzed at Baker’s lips, his body flooded with warmth.
